Westbound 60 Freeway shut down in Monterey Park after vehicle accidentAugust 9, 2012 | 10:56pmincrease text sizedecrease text size

Firefighters on Thursday night were trying to rescue at least one victim trapped in a vehicle in a two-car accident that forced officials to close the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway in Monterey Park.

The closure was near Atlantic Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said. The accident was reported about 10:15 p.m. after one of the vehicles stalled in a lane and was struck by a sport utility vehicle, according to preliminary CHP reports.

Traffic was backing up on the east-west artery. It was unclear when the section of freeway would be reopened.

[Updated at 11:05 p.m.: Officers have closed two eastbound lanes of the freeway near Atlantic Boulevard for an unknown duration, the CHP said.]
