Man dies after SUV plunges off 101 Freeway onto 405August 12, 2012 | 10:59am

A 30-year-old West Hills man was killed early Sunday when his SUV careened off a 101 Freeway overpass and landed on the 405 Freeway near Sherman Oaks, authorities said.

Daniel Contreras, the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 2 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.

Investigators said Contreras was driving north on the 101 Freeway when he hit a metal guardrail just east of where the freeway crosses over the 405, CHP said. The vehicle skidded along the rail and hit a raised concrete barrier before falling through a gap between a split in the 101.

The vehicle flipped and fell about 25 feet onto the northbound lanes of the 405, CHP said. No other injuries were reported.
