Triple-digit temperatures were recorded across Southern California on Tuesday as high pressure scorched mountain and valley areas in a heat wave that is expected to last through Saturday.
In Los Angeles County, Saugus hit 108 degrees, Pomona reached 101 and downtown Los Angeles at USC topped out at 91 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. A record high of 107 degrees for the day was tied in Lancaster. Along the coast, it was 70 at the Santa Monica Pier and 79 at Redondo Beach.
In the Inland Empire, Lake Elsinore recorded a high of 111 degrees while Ontario hit 104 degrees. In the desert, Palm Springs and Blythe each topped out at 113 degrees.
Lake Forest in Orange County hit 96 degrees, and Anaheim and Yorba Linda each recorded highs of 95 degrees.
The Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, as well as Los Angeles and Ventura county valleys. Officials are urging people to drink plenty of fluids and avoid excessive exposure to the sun to prevent problems such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The high-pressure ridge causing the heat is centered over Utah and is expected to combine with monsoonal moisture later in the week, which could spark thunderstorms in mountain and valley areas, according to forecasters.
