One person in a small plane was killed when the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood near Westwood on Friday, fire officials said.
The plane did not hit any buildings when it crashed near 2111 S. Glendon Ave., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
A fire sparked by the crash was quickly extinguished, he said. No other injuries have been reported.
The crash site was near Olympic and Westwood boulevards, south of Westwood Village and UCLA and north of the Westside Pavilion shopping center.
[Updated at 6:53 p.m.: The pilot of a single-engine Cessna 210 "declared an emergency for unknown reasons around 6:10 p.m. shortly after departing from Santa Monica Airport," said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor, who added that the information was preliminary and subject to change.
The plane is registered to a Santa Monica resident, whose identity was not released.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident, Gregor said. The NTSB is the lead investigative agency.]
