L.A. County probation's second-in-command announces retirementAugust 2, 2012 |  7:17pm

The second-in-command of Los Angeles County's troubled Probation Department announced his retirement on Thursday.

In a letter to county supervisors and current probation chief Jerry Powers, Cal Remington said he would retire effective Aug. 30. Over the past two-and-a-half years, Remington has served as the assistant chief probation officer as well as the acting chief when Donald Blevins was ousted in 2011.

"It has certainly been an honor to have worked with you and your staff on key challenges in our effort to reform the Probation Department," Remington wrote. With a staff of about 6,200, the department supervises about 60,000 adult probationers and 20,000 youths, including about 3,600 placed in detention halls and camps.

Remington helped oversee the department as it was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for misuse of force and poor oversight. The federal investigation is ongoing, although county officials say they hope it will conclude soon.
 
Remington, 65, said he was not asked to leave. "I haven't got pressured by anyone," he said.
 
Remington added that he did not plan to seek another job, although he could be open to other opportunities. "Right now, it's a retirement," he said.
