Firefighters quickly extinguished a brush fire that broke out in the Glendale hills Wednesday afternoon.
It took 50 firefighters about half an hour to douse the flames with the help of three water-dropping helicopters from the Los Angeles Fire Department, said Battalion Chief Thomas Propst of the Glendale Fire Department.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, which blackened about half an acre in a residential area with brush between the homes.
The blaze broke out about 2:45 p.m. in the 1900 block of Deermont Road.
"Fortunately we had neighbors who did good weed abatement," Propst said. "We also didn’t have strong winds. That helped prevent the spread" of the fire.
One home sustained about $10,000 worth of damage to its exterior, he said. And a man who had been defending a neighbor’s house with a garden hose was evaluated for a shoulder burn but refused further treatment, Propst said.
