Santa Paula authorities on Sunday were continuing to investigate a police shooting that left an armed suspect dead and an officer injured.
Santa Paula police were called to the 1100 block of New Street about 7:45 p.m. Saturday after a man reportedly brandished a gun in the area, said Capt. Don Aguilar of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
"Shortly after their arrival, there was an exchange of gunfire between police and the male suspect," Aguilar said. "As a result of the gunfire exchange, the suspect was injured and pronounced deceased at the scene."
One officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Aguilar said.
An autopsy showed the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Edgar Garcia of Santa Paula, died of a gunshot wound to his upper body, said James Baroni of the Ventura County medical examiner's office.
The Ventura County Sheriff Office's major crimes bureau is investigating the incident along with its professional standards bureau, Aguilar said. Aguilar did not comment on what prompted the gunfire, saying it was "a little early" in the investigation to be sure.
