Inmate escapes from fire camp in Angeles National ForestJuly 30, 2012 |  5:00pm

Authorities on Monday were searching for an inmate who escaped from a minimum-security state fire camp in the Angeles National Forest above Azusa.

Rafael Ortega, 20, is suspected of walking away from the Julius Klein Conservation Camp on East Fork Road, authorities said.

Ortega was last seen about 5:10 p.m. Sunday at his bed, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which runs the camp. He is serving a three-year, eight-month sentence for possession of a firearm by an ex-felon.

The camp houses about 125 inmates who work on hand crews under the supervision of state and county fire personnel.

Anyone with information is asked to call authorities at (626) 910-1213.
