This is one of the most common question that comes to everyone’s mind when they think of buying a computer. Gone are the days when a laptop used to cost as much as two computers. Laptops are pretty cheap nowadays and everyone who can afford to buy a computer can buy a laptop. The big question is whether to go for a laptop or a desktop.
I personally prefer using a laptop and I don’t think I’ll every buy a desktop computer again. I know lot of people reading this post would be imagining that maybe the work I do is not high end and hence I am making such a statement. This is not completely true and any work can be done using a laptop. In this post, I will list down some advantages of using a laptop and disadvantages of using a desktop computer.
Monitors – Lot of people go for a desktop computer because they need big monitors. If you are not aware, you can connect a single or multiple monitors to your laptop as well. Hence, it is not always true that you need a desktop in case you need to work on a big monitor.
Portable Data – With laptops you can carry your data wherever you go. It’s like roaming with your office. Whenever I go on a tour or holiday, I always carry my laptop with me which ensures that I have my entire office with me. I can work from wherever I am and all is good. While using desktops you can carry data in a drive in case you are traveling but that means you will have to connect that drive to a public computer or again carry a laptop. Also, many times we tend to forget the most important files on our desktops. This does not happen when you have a single laptop where all your work is present.
Space – Of course, a laptop needs very little space and you can move it anywhere in your home or office. If you are someone like me who works from Home, you can work on your laptop while watching TV or just by relaxing on a couch. This obviously increases productivity which cannot be done with a desktop.
Power Failure – If you are in India, you would know that the electricity can go any time. Imagine working on a document since 4 hours and then booom – power goes off. All your hard work is gone because it’s not saved. You would be smart if you use something like a UPS but that means more cost. With a laptop, you can keep working as long your battery is charged. The latest laptops will go in sleep mode in case the battery goes out which ensures that none of your unsaved work is lost.
Keyboard and Mouse - Most common reasons why people prefer working on a desktop is because of the keyword, mouse and monitor. Just like connecting a monitor, you can also connect a mouse and keyboard of your choice to your laptop. doing this will allow you to work on your laptop as if you are working on a desktop computer.
If you are still confused, I would recommend buying a laptop with a nice monitor, keyboard and mouse. Use your laptop as a CPU/Cabinet and carry it with you whenever you want. If you buy a desktop right now, be prepared to invest more money on a laptop six months later because I am sure you will.
