Should You Really Care About Google Updates?

Google has been announcing a few updates recently and people have been going crazy over it. I have seen lot of site owners talk about how their traffic has changed since the updates. To me, this does not really make any difference at all. I am happy if your traffic has increased and you should celebrate for that but what if your traffic has gone down? Should you get worried? I have seen site owners give up on the website for which their traffic has gone down. They blame it on the so called ‘Google Update’ and give up. But is it the update due to which the traffic has gone down?

Google’s algorithm is not known to anyone and the only reason why they would hide it is to stay safe from it’s competitors. With whatever information has been provided, it does not seem that Google hates or loves a particular person or organization. If this is true, then why do some sites rank high? In my 9 years of experience with search engines and websites, I have seen people get in to this business assuming it’s easy money. Lot of people get in and don’t make any money. This results in involving in to methods which are illegal and not liked by Google. If you are involved in such activities then Google will definitely not like your website and will punish it. Similarly, organizations get in to bad practices due to fierce competition and start using black hat techniques to

Coming back to the Google updates, there are no major updates happening in Google and I am sure that there will be no updates which can effect lot of websites. When I say major, I mean Google is not going to dislike something in particular. For eg. Google will never dislike a niche and start banning websites in that particular niche. Google really does not care what your website is about. All it wants your website to do is add value. Google wants it’s users to get what they want when they visit your website. Google wants you to keep it simple and keeping simple means:

  • Do not copy content from other websites

  • Do not build websites which are build only to make money and add no value to site visitors

  • Do not get involved in black hat link techniques

  • For better results, keep your website content updated

  • Follow good SEO practices

By just following the above mentioned rules, you can have a good website which will rank higher in Google. Apart from the above mentioned guidelines, Google has set it’s own webmaster guidelines. No Google update will effect your website negatively if your website follows all of the guidelines. The best thing to do is concentrate on your content and back links. Once you do this, everything good will happen to your website automatically.
